Ricky Ponting decides to skip IPL

Australian captain Ricky Ponting has decided to skip the IPL 2009 due to a very busy international schedule. Ponting said "My country comes first and there was no way I could give my all for Australia if I used the only two-week break we have to go and play in India". Ponting also said "Part of the reason I decided to withdraw from the IPL is that Twenty20 is such a physically demanding game and you have to be at your best to play the game and I want to be at my best for the [Twenty20] World Cup."

Australia now have a series against South Africa, then a series against Pakistan. The small break after it is the period for IPL. However World t20, ashes and other follow it which means a very busy schedule. Ponting was given rest during the series against New Zealand but after 2-losses, he came back. Australians poor performance this season is another major reason for Ponting's decision to opt out of IPL.

Ponting is another player after Michael Clarke and Johnson to opt out of the IPL. He plays for Knight Riders which now can replace him with another player for this season. However, Ponting has said that he will be available for IPL 2010

Australia vs New Zealand twenty20 - Highlights

Aus Vs NZ t20 on Feb 15, 2009
Match Result: Australia won by 1 run.
Australia 1st innings: 150 for 7 in 20 overs.
New Zealand : 149 for 5 in 20 overs.

Australia won the twenty20 against New Zealand by just one run in a very exciting match. New Zealand required 14 runs in the last over but could get only 12 with Franklin run out in the first ball. New Zealand finally required 12 runs of last two balls but NL McCullum hit 4 runs in 5th ball and it required 8 runs of last balls which was impossible unless there was a wide or no ball. McCullum got maximum i.e a six but was not enough and Australia own.

Earlier B McCullum has 61 runs for NZ. For Australia Hussey was top scorer with 41.

One of the best feature of the match was an incredible catch from Adam Voges for Australia. In 18.1 over B McCullum was on 61 and NZ required 20 runs from 12 balls.

How Adam Voges took the incredible catch:

Hilfenhaus bowled to McCullum, he hit it high at long-on and Voges takes the catch but throws the ball in air as he goes out of the ropes, moves forward again and takes the catch with a brilliant attempt. Simply, one of the best catches I have ever seen.

If this was not taken, it would probably a six and NZ would require just 14 runs in 11 balls with McCullum on crease. Voges is the hero for Australia. He proved the fact that catches wins matches.

Sri Lanka was able to avoid a whitewash as it won the 5th ODI against India making the series 4-1. Dilshan and Sangakkara as both were able to complete their half centuries. Sri Lanka Sri Lanka got to an aggressive start from Jayasuriya and Dilshan. Jayasuriya after making 37 fell into Pathan caught by Raina. Sangakkara and Dilshan kept going on. After 40 overs Sri Lanka were about 250. Then wickets fell regularly but lower order especially Maharoof rescued and took to 320.

India didn't get good start but Yuvraj batted beautifully. Dhoni made his fifty. Jadeja who made a debut showed good signs as a new comer in the team.

West Indies are really unpredictable. The first test between England and West Indies at Sabina park, Jamaica witnessed the best of Windies. West Indies won the first test by one innings and 23 runs. Day four was unbelievable as England got out for just 51 runs in their second innings. Jerome Taylor who got man of the match took 5 English wickets in Day 4. India has got to no.2 in ODI rankings. One more win in this series makes 5-0 which means a huge dominance against Sri Lanka. Though the match is not important in terms of results in series it will be great for India if they win.

Tyron Henderson - Why he got such high price in IPL 2009

Rajasthan Royals has brought Tyron Henderson for $650,000 which was even greater than that paid to their captain Shane Warne last year. According to telegraph.co.uk Henderson was watching it on the internet and he couldn't even believe it. He said "It is a total surprise as I thought I might be lucky to get a $150,000 deal. I think Shaun Udal at Middlesex might have put a word in for me with Warney. I owe him a beer."

Here's how the bidding took place:

Though his base price was just $100,000 his price rised rapidly as Deccan and Rajathan raised their bids rapidly. Mumbai eventually raised the bid to $200,000. Deccan bid $300,000 but Rajasthan went up to $325,000 after which Deccan raised it further to $350,000. Rajasthan continued to compete, forcing Deccan to raise their bid to $400,000. Rajasthan raised it to $425,000 but Deccan came back with a bid of $450,000. Not to be outdone, Rajasthan went up to $475,000 but Deccan would not be deterred, raising it to $500,000. The bids continued to escalate and Deccan just when Deccan seemed to have secured Henderson for $600,000, Rajasthan went up to $650,000. Deccan did not raise their bid and Tyron Henderson went to Rajasthan.

So, why such high price for this player who is 34 years 190 days, doesn't have any international experience except a t20 against India and is in the verge of the retirement ? I tried to get the answer. An article in cricinfo has enlisted him among the players born for Twenty20 cricket. He has the ability to hit great hits out of the ground. He has an average of 22 in tweny20 cricket and he is the bowler with most wickets in twenty20 cricket. He has taken 74 wickets in 62 matches.

Great. I think he was unlucky not to be called by South African team. And Rajasthan Royals who won the IPL 2008 has signed him in their team, he does certainly has more abilities which will of course be witnessed in the tournament.

List of players sold at IPL auction 2009

Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff topped the IPL second Auction as both got sold for $1.55 million each which is highest for any player in IPL. Before this, Dhoni was the most expensive player. Flintof was the one who got lot more than his base price from Chennai Super Kings. Similary, the Pietersen was grabbed by Bangalore Royal Challengers who finished 7th in last IPL. Other players in the auction, their price and teams which they were sold are:

England:
Kevin Pietersen, $1,550,000 (Base Price - 1,350,000): Bangalore Royal Challengers

JP Duminy, $950,000 (Base Price - 300,000): Mumbai Indians
Tyron Henderson, $650,000 (Base Price - 100,000): Rajasthan Royals

Dwayne Smith, $100,000 (Base Price - 100,000): Hyderabad Deccan Chargers
Jerome Taylor, $150,000 (Base Price - 150,000): Kings XI Punjab

Sri Lanka:
Thilan Tushara, $140,000 (Base Price - 100,000): Chennai Super Kings

The unsold Players are :

Brad Haddin, Kapugedera, Stuart Clark, Phil Jaques, Ashwell Prince, Luke Wright, Kulasekara, Andrew Neil, Shakib Al Hasan, Morne van Wyk, Steven Smith, Ashley Noffke, Bodi, Jerome Taylor, Daren Powell, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib, Ashraful, Tamim, Jon Moss, Bryce McGain, Aiden Blizzard, James Franklin, Sarwan, Michael Klinger, Weeraratne, P. Jayawardene, Dominic Thornely, Samit Patel, Yusuf Abdullah, Daniel Harris, Kemar Roach, Aaron Bird, Michael Dighton, Michael Hill, Brett Geeves,

Teams: Rajasthan Royals (2 players), Kolkata Knight Riders (1), Bangalore Royal Challengers (2), Deccan Chargers (2), Chennai Super Kings (3), Mumbai Indians (2), Delhi Daredevils (2), Kings XI Punjab (2).

The players got lot more in 2009 auction than those who were signed in 2008. Talking about others apart from Flintoff and Pietersen, JP Duminy got $950,000 which makes him the third most expensive player in the auction. But Henderson of South Africa who has almost no international experience except one t20 against India got $650,000 which is quite surprising. Mortaza from Bangladesh was sold for $600,000 which is quite high.
